‘timelines’, an inaugural solo exhibition by Jennifer Lara White, explores the relationship between the cross-temporal subjectivation of identity and ontological meta-spectatorship, questioning where and how we can come to encounter the real as we traverse between them.
The ontology of a persisting entity (object or event) through time is equal to its distinct temporal parts. As these parts enter into relations, the nature of this entity becomes fundamentally cross-temporal. The exhibition takes place as a reconstruction of these temporal parts, through archival film and sound, personal and anonymous found objects, and time-based digital mediums which reveal the synthesis of these realities.
Across the space, Jennifer maps psychogeographical elements of personal nostalgia into a memory-hybrid landscape, bringing the viewer’s attention to the role of spectatorship as the meaning-giving entity of our experiences. Nostalgic viewership validates the need to know one’s experience as having meaning, that to be witness to one’s past is to affirm its reality – and by extension, affirm the reality of the self. We are led to consider, therefore, if who we are is the part which changes (conceptual models of the self), or, perhaps, if it is the part which stays the same (the awareness which bears witness).
